Sleep apnea is linked to increased risk of stroke, obesity, and now MSNBC is reporting that it may also increase your risk of developing dementia.
Studies at the University of California, San Francisco by Dr. Kristine Yaffe, professor of psychiatry, neurology, and epidemiology, show that females over 65 with sleep apnea are two times more likely to be diagnosed with dementia in the next 5 years than those who do not suffer from sleep apnea.

Two recent articles in WebMD and Health Day point to a significant connection between sleep apnea and weight loss. According to WebMD, patients who suffer from sleep apnea are more likely to be obese. However, studies show they do not have the usual low leptin levels associated with being overweight, but have uncharacteristically high levels instead. When their apnea is treated, their leptin levels drop, and they lose weight. According to the article, this might happen because people with apnea may be resistant to the fullness signal that leptin sends to the brain, or because the overall response to leptin may be more individual than previously thought.
